Points Expiry: Avoiding Losing Unused Points

Unused points that are not banked before your programme's deadline are forfeited. For many members, this represents a real annual financial loss. Understanding when your points expire and what options you have helps you make better use of your entitlement.

When points expire

Most programmes credit points on a fixed anniversary date each year. Unused points from the previous year expire at or around the same date — unless you have banked them. Some programmes have a grace period; most do not. Check your specific anniversary date and banking deadline.

What you can do with expiring points

Options before expiry typically include: making a reservation that uses the points, banking them into the next year (if within the banking window), converting them to an exchange programme credit (subject to fees), or using them for shorter stays or add-ons such as dining or spa credits, where the programme supports this.

Points you cannot save

If you miss both the booking and banking deadlines, your points will expire without recovery. Some clubs offer a hardship process for exceptional circumstances, but this is at the club's discretion and not guaranteed. Planning ahead is the only reliable safeguard.

Tracking your balance

Log in to your member portal regularly — particularly in the two to three months before your anniversary — to check your current balance, any banked points, and their respective expiry dates. Many clubs will not send automatic expiry warnings.
